Does my Palm Coast attic need more blown-in insulation?
Blown-in insulation in Palm Coast is loose fiberglass or cellulose that we blow through a hose across your attic floor, so the ceiling holds back the heat the roof soaks up and the rooms under it can finally cool down.
Most people call because a bedroom upstairs or the room over the garage never cools off, or because they just bought an older house and have no idea what's in the attic. The price mostly comes down to how big the attic is, how many inches are already up there, how many holes in the attic floor need closing, and whether the old material is clean enough to leave, since anything soaked or dirty has to come out first through insulation removal. That last part moves the schedule too, along with whether the job needs a permit. When I come out, I measure what you've got and tell you what I'd do first and why. We're based in Palm Coast and work in the cities around it, north toward St. Augustine, south toward Ormond Beach and west out to Palatka.
How can you tell your attic insulation is falling short?
Rooms that stay hot
One bedroom or the room over the garage is still warm long after the rest of the house has cooled. That usually means the attic over it is thin or air is leaking up through the ceiling, and every summer you wait, the AC runs longer trying to catch up.
Joists showing through
You pop the hatch and can see the tops of the ceiling joists sticking up out of the insulation. The layer has settled or was thin to begin with, so the afternoon heat comes straight through the drywall into the rooms below.
Stained or matted insulation
There are dark patches, flattened spots or droppings in the insulation. That's usually a roof leak or animals, and waiting lets water reach the framing while new insulation blown over it would only bury the problem.
How we install blown-in insulation
I look the attic over before we touch it, because insulation laid over a leak or a problem nobody checked is money wasted. Then our crew closes up the holes in the attic floor around pipes, wires and the hatch, so air stops pushing heat and moisture past the insulation. We set baffles at the eaves, which are short channels that keep the soffit vents open so the attic can still breathe. Only then do we blow it in, carrying it all the way out to the edges of the ceiling, because the edges over the outside walls are where it usually ends up thin or bare. We clean up the hatch area and anything the hose touched before we go.
If what's up there now is wet, moldy or full of droppings, we pull it out with insulation removal instead of covering it up. And when the attic is only part of why the house feels off, our home insulation work looks at the walls, floors and crawl space too.
Topping up a thin attic
This suits houses where the old insulation is dry and clean but has settled or was never deep enough. We seal the floor openings and blow fresh material over it, so you keep what's still doing its job.
Clearing out and starting over
This suits attics with soaked or dirty material, or an older house you just bought and don't trust yet. The old fill comes out first, so the new layer isn't sitting on the same problem.

(386) 359-8197Blown-in insulation permits and attics in Palm Coast
In Palm Coast, the building official issues permits for alterations and repairs to a house, and the city's permit list names insulation as its own permit type, so I treat a blown-in job here as one that may well need a permit. If yours does, we pull it as the licensed contractor and set up the inspections, and if it isn't clear, we ask Palm Coast Building Services before we start. You can reach them yourself at Buildingdivision@palmcoastgov.com or (386) 986-3780.
Most attics I climb into around here have the air handler and ductwork up there with the insulation, so we keep a clear path to the equipment and work the fill around it instead of burying the access. We run into the same setup on jobs in Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach, and we handle it the same way.
What happens after you call about blown-in insulation in Palm Coast?
Call or send us a note
Call (386) 359-8197 or use the form, and tell us roughly how old the house is and which rooms bother you. We'll set a time for me to come out.
I check the attic first
I go up, measure how many inches are there and look for leaks, droppings, open gaps and buried vents. You get a plain estimate that says what I'd do first and why, and if something like a roof leak should be fixed before insulation, I'll tell you instead of selling you a job.
Our installers seal and blow
If the job needs a permit, we take care of it, then our own installers seal the attic floor, set the baffles and blow in the insulation. They clean up the hatch area and the hose path before they leave.
We go over it together
When the crew is done, I walk through it with you and show you the depth in the middle and out at the edges. You see the coverage for yourself instead of taking my word for it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell if my attic in Palm Coast needs more insulation?
Measure how thick it is, because if there's less than 6 to 7 inches up there, you'd likely benefit from adding more. Stick a ruler down to the drywall in a few spots, including near the edges, and note any wet or dirty patches while you're there. If you'd rather not climb up, I'll measure it when I come out.
How much does blown-in insulation cost in Florida?
Blown fiberglass to R-49, a rating for how well it slows heat, usually runs about $2,000 to $4,500 per job for a typical 1,800 square foot attic in Florida. That's the going rate across the state, not our price. Your own number depends on the size and condition of your attic, and the estimate gives it to you along with what I'd do first.
What is the best way to prepare an attic for blown-in insulation?
Inspect the attic first, then seal every opening through the attic floor before any insulation goes in. Federal guidance lists the first things to check as live knob-and-tube wiring, old vermiculite fill, bathroom fans venting into the attic and roof leaks, then calls for sealant, spray foam or blocking at the openings, with solid blocking over big holes and open soffits, metal blocking and collars around hot flues, and covers over certain can lights. Checking first and sealing before we blow is the order we work in.
Who can apply for a building permit in Palm Coast?
In Palm Coast, a building permit applicant has to be a licensed contractor or the legal property owner. An owner who applies as an owner/builder has to be doing the work for their own use and occupancy, not to sell or lease the house. When we do the job, we apply as the licensed contractor.
Do we have to leave the house while you blow in attic insulation?
Usually not, because loose fiberglass or cellulose doesn't come with a re-entry time, a stretch when you stay out while it cures, the way spray foam does. Most people stay home, and we just ask that kids and pets keep clear of the hatch and the hose path while we work. We clean up the dust before we pack up so the house is fine to live in.
Is spray foam better than blown-in insulation for a Florida attic?
For most attics, sealing the gaps and topping up with loose fill is the better buy. Foam costs more, though it seals air at the same time it insulates, so it starts to make sense when the ductwork lives up in the attic. I'll tell you which one your attic calls for when I see it.
