How do you add insulation to a house that's already built?
Retrofit insulation in Palm Coast means adding insulation to the attic, floors and crawl space of a house you already live in and sealing the air leaks around it, so your cooling costs come down and the hot rooms even out.
Most people call because a bedroom upstairs or the room over the garage won't cool down, or because they just bought an older house and have no idea what's in the attic. The price turns on how many inches are already up there, whether the old insulation is wet or dirty and has to come out first, how many gaps need attic air sealing, and whether you go with loose fill or foam. The schedule mostly turns on that same cleanup and on any permit the job needs, and my estimate tells you what I'd do first and why, so you see your own figure before anything starts.
How do you know your house needs more insulation?
Upstairs rooms stay hot
The AC runs all afternoon and the bedrooms upstairs or the room over the garage still feel warm. That usually means the attic above them is thin on insulation or leaking air into the house, and every summer you wait, you're paying to cool air that slips right back out.
You can see the joists
If you open the attic hatch and the tops of the ceiling joists are showing, there isn't much insulation up there, or what's there has packed down over the years. It won't get any thicker on its own, so the gap between what you pay to cool the house and what it holds keeps growing.
Dark or matted insulation
Insulation that looks stained, flattened or smells musty has usually been soaked by a roof leak or used by rodents. Covering it with fresh material keeps the problem in your attic, and the longer it sits against the framing, the more damage the moisture can do.
How we do retrofit insulation
On an older house I'd rather look at the attic, floors and crawl space together than sell you one piece of it, because heat and moisture move through all three. If the old insulation is wet, matted or full of droppings, we pull it out instead of burying it. Then we seal the gaps around can lights, pipes, wiring and the attic hatch, keep the vents at the eaves clear so the attic can still breathe, and blow in loose fill, insulation that goes in through a hose, to an even depth that runs all the way out to the edges where thin coverage usually hides.
Loose fill is often the right fit when you want your ceilings and walls left alone, since it settles into odd spaces without anyone opening them up. Spray foam insulation costs more but seals air while it insulates, and I'd usually only point you that way when your ductwork runs through the attic. For most houses, sealing the gaps and topping up the attic insulation does the job for less.
Seal the gaps and top up loose fill
This suits most older homes with a vented attic and no ductwork up there, because it fixes the leaks and adds depth without touching your finishes. It's also the less expensive route, which is why it's where I usually start.
Spray foam under the roof
This suits houses where the air handler and ducts live in the attic, since foam on the underside of the roof brings that space inside the house. It costs more, so we only recommend it once we've checked what else is up there.

(386) 359-8197What changes a retrofit insulation job in Palm Coast
In Palm Coast, the city's building official issues the permits for building work, alteration and repair, and any permit a job needs has to be in hand before the work starts. Whether a particular insulation job needs one isn't something I'll guess at, so when it isn't clear, we check with the city's building department before our crew sets foot in your attic.
A lot of what we open up around here is single-story homes with the air handler and ductwork in the attic, where summer heat bakes the duct runs and damp air finds every gap. That's why we look at venting and moisture before we think about depth, and it's the same story on jobs in Ormond Beach and Palatka.
What happens after you call about retrofit insulation
Call or send us a note
Call (386) 359-8197 or use the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time. It helps to tell us which rooms bother you and roughly how old the house is.
I come out and look
I check the attic, crawl space or walls myself and see what's already up there before I price anything. You get a plain estimate that says what I'd do first and why, so you know the cost before any work starts.
Permit first, then the work
If the job needs a permit, we take care of it before anything else happens. Then our own installers do the sealing and insulating.
We go over it together
When the installers finish, I walk through the work with you. You see the sealed gaps and the depth of the new insulation before we pack up.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to add insulation to an attic in Florida?
Topping up an attic with blown fiberglass and sealing the air leaks usually costs about $2,500 to $4,000 per job in Florida. That's the going rate across the state for that work, not our price, and pulling out damaged insulation or choosing foam will push a job higher. I give you your own figure after looking at the attic, whether you're in Palm Coast or anywhere from St. Augustine down to Ormond Beach and out to Palatka.
Should air sealing come before insulation in an attic?
Yes, in an existing vented attic every opening through the attic floor should be sealed before new insulation goes in. Sealing saves energy and helps keep moisture problems out of the attic, and once the insulation is down those gaps are buried. It's fair to ask any crew whether they'll seal those openings with sealant, one-part spray foam or rigid blocking before they insulate.
Will my air conditioning need changes after I add insulation?
It might, because a house that loses less heat can leave the system a bit oversized. One foam maker's retrofit guide says the unit may then short cycle, switching off after quick runs because it doesn't need long to hold the temperature, and in a hot, humid place like ours that can cool the air before it pulls the moisture out. The guide says to have an HVAC contractor inspect the system, and I'll tell you if I think yours is worth a look.
How do I know if spray foam is safe with a gas water heater in my attic?
If a gas water heater or furnace in your attic is the kind that pulls its combustion air from the attic, the same maker's guide says it can't run safely once the attic is sealed with foam. Those units have to be dealt with before you choose a sealed, unvented attic. I check what's up there before we talk about foam at all.
Who can apply for a building permit in Palm Coast?
In Palm Coast, a building permit application has to come from a licensed contractor or the legal owner of the property. When your job needs a permit, we pull it as your contractor and set up the inspections, so you're not filling out applications.
How do I qualify for the FPL rebate on attic insulation?
If you're an FPL customer, the ceiling insulation rebate needs an active FPL residential account, central electric air conditioning and heating for the whole house, and existing ceiling insulation verified at less than R-8 on the R-value scale, which measures how well insulation slows heat. The new insulation also has to go in an accessible attic, so flat roofs and attics you can't get into don't qualify. You can check the details in FPL's program rules.
